History
In the turbulent and challenging world of today it is dishearteningly easy for individuals, families and even communities to be pulled into the state of despair and disillusionment because of poverty and homelessness, drug abuse, crime, a lack of self esteem, the breakdown of the family unit, and general community deterioration. Such disenchantment, unfortunately, tends to feed on itself and promote a continuing and downward spiral of helplessness, frustration and anger. No community has struggled with this more than Nanakuli.
Recognizing the devastating and detrimental impacts of these social ills, members of the Nanakuli community realized that positive change begins with the basic moral values of each and every individual. Believing that we all have the options to choose our attitude and outlook in life, community leaders came together in an effort to get Nanakuli residents to emphasize the positive aspects of their lives and focus on accepting and practice the inherent values and power of the Aloha Spirit. They believed that this personal conviction would, in-turn, strengthen and empower the family unit, which would then generate a groundswell of grassroots support, unifying, healing and enabling the community to improve its overall well-being.
As a key element of this difficult transformation process, community leaders, church members, and residents of the community Nanakuli developed the “Power of Aloha Card”. This card, which emphasizes the benefits of the Aloha Spirit at work, serves as a simple personal reminder that by embracing and living the values of Aloha, every individual can promote the harvest and constructive fruits throughout their community.
By highlighting the moral values that are the basis of Hawaii’s traditional Aloha Spirit, and capitalizing on the mystical appeal and spirituality inherent in the word “Aloha,” the use of the “Power of Aloha Card” has spread like wildfire and is now transforming individuals, families, schools and businesses not only in Nanakuli, but in communities throughout Hawaii. The concept of the card is so powerful that it has even transcended Hawaii’s shores, benefiting cites, towns and neighborhoods both nationwide and worldwide.
